Scents Of Affection
Candles and Me
Me and Candles At first I’m thinking, “Oh I like scented candles!”, but do I have a story? I love the smell of cinnamon, burn several candles at a time, and always have candles all over my table at Christmas, some of them handmade by personal friends. I even have a favorite candle store in Denver. I search out real black candles, as opposed to white candles, dipped in black wax. I’ll drive out of my way to find them. The best place to get them is craft stores around Halloween. At that time they set them cheaply, in bulk. Year round, there’s always a great deal at craft stores for whatever color is in season. I do, beyond all that, come to think of it, have a lovely scented candle story. When I was 12 years old I lived down the street from my grandmother, whom I worshipped like a god. For her birthday, I got all this change together, walked more than a mile to Target, and bought her a $12 candle. The truth was I had no idea what to get her, I just wanted to purchase some object that would remind her how much I love...

Candles are a Girl's Best Friend
Candles are a Girl's Best Friend I love to burn candles when I come home from work at night. It’s one of the first things I do. I walk in the door, take off my jacket and put my purse down, then light some of the candles around my living room. The candles that I set alight depends on my mood. Am I feeling warm and cozy? Is it cold outside? Do I just want to curl up on the couch with a good book? I will most likely burn vanilla. Not just a plain old cheap vanilla candle. I go for highly-scented, deep, rich vanilla smells. Did I have a hard day at work and I just want to relax? I would probably light a lavender candle. A yummy chai candle is great for winter, just as fresh-smelling berry and melon scents are great in the summer or whenever the weather is warm and sunny! The candles from “Aroma Naturals” are the greatest in my opinion. They are long-burning, burn evenly, have a strong smell (I don’t like wimpy candle scents), and are in great colors. Speaking of the smells, they have some fabulous concoctions. I love their vanilla...

Scented Inspiration
By Ann Lifton
Scented Inspiration I love sweet-smelling candles, like vanilla or strawberry, candles that smell so good you're tempted to eat them. My mother bought me a chocolate scented candle at Christmas, it smells so good that I keep it on my bedside table and sniff it whenever I go into the bedroom. I haven't lit it yet, I'm just enjoying the fragrance it gives out. My favourite candles tend to be quite chunky-looking, with a good colour, something that looks as good as it smells. The prettiest candle I ever had was pale pink, with a frosted effect running through it. I also like votives/tea-lights with great fragrances. The Yankee Candle Co seems like a good range. My children love picking them all up in the store and trying all the different scents. I also like floral fragrances such as Rose, Gardenia or Lavender, the kinds of scents that make me feel as if I'm standing in a beautiful garden in the height of summer. Just smelling them is enough to transport me there, even in the depths of Winter. In my bedroom I always have a special candle on the dresser that I pick out especially - it has to be good quality, look pretty and have a delicious scent. This candle I light when I'm trying to carve out some me-time. I retreat to my bedroom with my journal and put on some classical music to listen to while I scribble down my thoughts and feelings and express what's going on in my life. Lighting my candle marks out the time as being precious and turns a five minute break into a loving ritual. As I'm a full time mother with a special needs child, I have to create little pockets of me-time throughout the week in order to refresh my sanity. I like to light candles when I'm writing, this time something with a fresh, uplifting scent like the ocean breeze. It sends a message to my brain that it's now time to knuckle down and create. Writing is my long-held ambition, but there isn't normally a lot of time in the day to fit it in so I have to make it count. The flicker of the candle flame reminds me to make the most of whatever time I've managed to find for my writing, while the subtle scent keeps my brain ticking over. It makes it easier to get inspired and transport my imagination to a different place, different time. Forest scents are good too, creating a mood of earthy mystery that's great for story-telling. In the evenings, we have a Hot Buttered Rum scented candle that creates a cosy feeling in our living room, perfect for snuggling up on the sofa and reconnecting at the end of the day.
